What happensPermalink
Officials accuse Jeremiah of weakening Jerusalem’s defenders by preaching surrender and persuade Zedekiah to let them kill him. They lower him into a muddy cistern, but Ebed-melech the Ethiopian appeals to the king and rescues him. Zedekiah secretly seeks Jeremiah’s counsel. Surrender will spare his household and keep the city from burning; resistance will bring capture and fire. Fearful of Judean deserters and his officials, Zedekiah keeps the meeting secret.
Why it mattersPermalink
The message condemned as harmful offers a path through the crisis. Ebed-melech acts courageously to save Jeremiah, while Zedekiah fears the people around him. Their contrasting responses prepare for chapter 39’s promise to Ebed-melech and the king’s ruin. Even at this late stage, the offer to spare the city calls for obedience.
Key versePermalink
Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.”
