What happensPermalink
Babylon breaches Jerusalem. Zedekiah and his soldiers flee, but he is captured and brought before Nebuchadnezzar, who kills his sons and nobles before his eyes, blinds him, and sends him to Babylon. The Babylonians burn the city, demolish its walls, exile survivors, and leave some poor people to work the land. Nebuchadnezzar orders Jeremiah protected; he is entrusted to Gedaliah. An oracle given before the city fell promises Ebed-melech deliverance because he trusted God.
Why it mattersPermalink
Jerusalem’s fall and Zedekiah’s capture vindicate Jeremiah’s warnings. Yet the account also records care amid catastrophe: Jeremiah is protected, the poor receive land, and Ebed-melech is promised his life. His trust contrasts with the king’s fear. Chapter 52 will revisit the fall, giving fuller attention to the temple and exile.
Key versePermalink
