What happensPermalink
During Jerusalem’s siege, Zedekiah refuses God’s word but asks Jeremiah to pray. When Egypt advances, Babylon withdraws, but God warns that Egypt will retreat and Babylon return; even wounded soldiers would burn Jerusalem. Jeremiah leaves for Benjamin but is falsely accused of desertion, beaten, and imprisoned. Zedekiah secretly asks for God’s word; Jeremiah repeats that the king will be delivered to Babylon and appeals for better treatment. Zedekiah moves him to the guard’s court and provides bread.
Why it mattersPermalink
The Egyptian intervention explains the military reprieve mentioned in chapter 34. Temporary relief cannot overturn God’s warning. Zedekiah seeks counsel and shows limited concern for Jeremiah, yet continues to resist the message. The prophet’s transfer to the court of the guard prepares for the events of chapter 38.
Key versePermalink
For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.
