Isaiah names his son Maher-shalal-hash-baz, signifying that Assyria will soon plunder Syria and northern Israel. Because Judah rejects the quiet waters of God’s care, Assyria will flood into Judah up to its neck, though hostile plans will ultimately fail because God is with His people. God tells Isaiah to resist popular fears, fear Him alone, seal His teaching among his disciples, and wait for Him. The people must seek God’s word rather than mediums and the dead.

As Assyria approaches, God calls Isaiah and his disciples to fear Him, trust His word, and receive His presence as sanctuary rather than snare. Maher-shalal-hash-baz confirms the Immanuel promise without necessarily being Immanuel himself. Romans 9:33 and 1 Peter 2:8 apply the stumbling-block image to Christ; faith waits for God, while unbelief seeks guidance elsewhere and ends in darkness.
