Isaiah promises glory for northern lands once humbled: people in darkness will see a great light. God will multiply their joy, break oppression, and end warfare through a child called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. He will rule David’s kingdom forever with justice. Isaiah then turns to northern Israel: because its people answer judgment with pride rather than repentance, God continues striking them through corrupt leaders, civil violence, and foreign enemies.
Why it mattersPermalink
God promises a divine Davidic king who brings light and peace, even as unrepentant northern Israel continues under judgment. Matthew 4:15–16 sees Jesus’ Galilean ministry as the dawn of this promised light. Isaiah speaks of the future victory as accomplished because God’s promise is certain. Israel’s repeated refrain shows that suffering alone does not create repentance; chapters 10–11 will reveal a returning remnant.
