When Syria and northern Israel attack Judah, Ahaz and his people tremble. God sends Isaiah to promise that both enemy kings will soon disappear, warning, “If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all.” Ahaz refuses an offered sign, so God gives one: a virgin will conceive a son called Immanuel, and before he matures the enemy lands will be deserted. Because Ahaz trusts Assyria, however, God will use Assyria to devastate Judah.
Why it mattersPermalink
The Immanuel sign confronts Ahaz with Isaiah’s central choice: trust God’s presence and promise to David, or trust Assyria and suffer through it. The sign first assures Ahaz’s generation that both enemy kingdoms will soon fall. Matthew 1:22–23 identifies its fullest fulfillment in Jesus, born of the virgin Mary. The power Ahaz chooses as refuge becomes God’s instrument of judgment.
