God appoints Cyrus as His anointed ruler, granting him victories and naming him beforehand so Israel and the whole world will know that the Lord alone is God. He rebukes those who question their Creator’s purposes and promises that the nations will recognize His presence with Israel. Unlike idols, God publicly foretells the future and acts righteously. He invites every nation to turn from powerless gods and receive salvation, declaring that every knee will bow before Him.
Why it mattersPermalink
By appointing Cyrus, God proves His right to direct rulers and extends His saving invitation to the ends of the earth. Cyrus does not know the Lord, yet his victories serve God’s purpose for Israel. Paul uses the potter imagery in Romans 9:20–21 and quotes verse 23 in Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:10–11 applies every knee bowing to Jesus. The Creator who governs history alone can save.
