After judging Israel, God promises to pour out water on the thirsty land and His Spirit upon their descendants, who will flourish and gladly claim His name. He alone is God and challenges any rival to explain the past or announce the future. Idol-makers use part of a tree for fuel and worship the rest, too blinded to recognize the absurdity. In contrast, God blots out Israel’s sins, redeems them, and names Cyrus as His shepherd who will rebuild Jerusalem and its temple.
Why it mattersPermalink
The incomparable Lord pours out His Spirit, exposes idols, forgives Israel, and appoints Cyrus to rebuild Jerusalem. Human-made gods leave their makers blind, while God alone creates, foretells, redeems, and saves. By naming Cyrus before the restoration, He demonstrates that history obeys His word. Cyrus later authorizes the temple’s rebuilding (Ezra 1:1–4), and it is completed under Darius (Ezra 6:14–15).
