What happensPermalink
Israel cries, “My God, we—Israel—know you,” but their actions deny it. They reject what is good, appoint rulers without God, make idols from silver and gold, and seek security through foreign alliances. Their calf-idol will be shattered, and those who sow the wind will reap the whirlwind. Though Ephraim multiplies altars and sacrifices, God rejects their worship because they disregard His law. Israel trusts palaces and Judah fortified cities, but God will destroy their strongholds.
Why it mattersPermalink
Israel claims to know God while treating His revealed law as something foreign. Kings, idols, foreign allies, altars, and fortifications all become substitutes for trusting and obeying Him. None can rescue them from the judgment their rebellion has produced. Hosea therefore continues his central contrast between genuine knowledge of God and religious claims unsupported by covenant faithfulness.
