What happensPermalink

God longs to heal Israel, but their evil continues before Him. Hosea pictures them as a blazing oven whose heat consumes their rulers, an unturned cake weakened by foreign influence, a silly dove fluttering between Egypt and Assyria, and a faulty bow that cannot hit its target. Israel seeks grain and wine through pagan rites and protection through alliancies with foreign nations, yet does not sincerely cry out to God. Though God strengthened them and desires to redeem them, they continually rebel against Him.

Why it mattersPermalink

Hosea’s overlapping metaphors portray a nation unstable and self-destructive because it will not return to God. Political intrigue repeatedly destroys Israel’s rulers, foreign alliances consume its strength, and its diplomacy shifts between Egypt and Assyria. Israel is constantly seeking help, but consistently seeks it in the wrong places. God remains the healer and redeemer they refuse to seek.

Key versePermalink

Woe to them, for they have strayed from me! Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me! I would redeem them, but they speak lies against me.

Hosea 7:13
