What happensPermalink

Because Israel has forsaken God, they will be driven from His land into exile, where they will eat unclean food and be unable to celebrate His appointed feasts. Wherever they flee, death will find them. God once delighted in Israel like wilderness grapes, but they turned to Baal-peor. Now Ephraim’s glory will vanish: conception, birth, and children themselves will fail. God will reject them, and they will become wanderers among the nations.

Why it mattersPermalink

Hosea portrays the terrifying reversal of Israel’s covenant blessings. They lose the promised land, their worship, God’s presence, their children, and finally their settled existence as a people. The fertility they sought from other gods becomes barrenness. Hosea’s prophecy was fulfilled when Assyria conquered the northern kingdom, captured Samaria, and scattered much of its population throughout the empire. Israel ceased to exist as an independent kingdom, becoming the “wanderers among the nations” Hosea foresaw.
