What happensPermalink
The chapter opens with a call to return to the Lord, trusting Him to heal and revive His people. God laments that Israel’s and Judah’s love disappears like morning mist. Their faithlessness has brought judgment, because He desires steadfast love and knowledge of Him more than sacrifices offered without faithful obedience. Like Adam, they have broken covenant with God. Violence and treachery persist throughout the land, even among the priests, and Judah also faces judgment.
Why it mattersPermalink
The opening appeal looks to God for Israel’s restoration. Christian readers may also see in its “third day” language a pattern fulfilled in Jesus’s resurrection. Israel has broken faith with the God who bound them to Himself in covenant. Their sacrifices cannot compensate for lives lacking the steadfast love and knowledge God desires.
Key versePermalink
What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away.
