What happensPermalink
Ephraim once commanded respect but now multiplies sin and worships man-made idols. God alone has been Israel’s God and Savior since Egypt, providing for them in the wilderness, yet prosperity made them forget Him. Therefore He will attack like a lion, leopard, and bear. Their kings cannot save them, and Israel refuses repentance like a child refusing to be born. God speaks of ransom from Death, yet announces judgment without compassion. An invader will plunder Samaria and bring devastating judgment.
Why it mattersPermalink
Israel’s tragedy is that the God they reject is their only Savior. Idols, kings, prosperity, and political power are temporary; the Lord who delivered them from Egypt alone has power even over Death. Yet Israel persistently refuses to return to Him, so the Savior becomes their judge. Hosea 13:4 echoes the covenant commands of Exodus: Israel has abandoned the God who first made them His people.
Key versePermalink
But I am the Lord your God from the land of Egypt; you know no God but me, and besides me there is no savior.
