What happensPermalink
Hosea recalls Jacob, Israel’s namesake, who struggled with God, sought His favor, and met Him at Bethel. Israel should likewise return to God, practice love and justice, and wait for Him. Instead, Ephraim uses dishonest scales, oppresses others, and trusts wealth as proof of innocence. God reminds them that He brought Israel from Egypt and repeatedly sent prophets, yet Ephraim persists in idolatry and provokes Him to judgment.
Why it mattersPermalink
Hosea uses Jacob’s story—his grasping, struggle, and need for divine favor—to call Israel back to God. God has guided His people from the patriarchs through the Exodus and prophets, yet they answer with oppression and idolatry. Hosea still calls them to return, but God will hold Ephraim responsible for its bloodguilt and repay its rebellion.
Key versePermalink
“So you, by the help of your God, return, hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God.”
