What happensPermalink

God remembers Israel as a beloved son whom He called from Egypt, taught to walk, healed, fed, and gently led. Yet the more God called, the more Israel turned to idols. Therefore Assyria will conquer them. Still, God cannot surrender Israel to complete destruction like Admah and Zeboiim: His compassion is stirred within Him. After judgment, God will call again, and His children will return trembling from Egypt and Assyria to their homes.

Why it mattersPermalink

Hosea reaches the heart of God’s relationship with Israel. Their persistent rebellion deserves judgment, yet cannot exhaust His love; because He is God and not merely human, His compassion preserves a future for them. Matthew 2:15 later applies “Out of Egypt I called my son” to Jesus, presenting Christ as the Son who retraces Israel’s story and faithfully embodies God’s people.

Key versePermalink

How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender.
