What happensPermalink

Zechariah sees a huge flying scroll inscribed with curses against thieves and those who swear falsely by God’s name. God sends the curse into the houses of the guilty, where it consumes even their timber and stones. Zechariah then sees a woman confined inside a basket and identified as Wickedness. A heavy lead cover seals her inside, and two winged women carry the basket away to Shinar, where a house will be prepared for it.

Why it mattersPermalink

God’s restoration of His people also requires their purification. The flying scroll announces judgment against covenant-breaking within the restored community, while the second vision depicts Wickedness itself being removed from the land. Its destination in Shinar, the land associated with Babel, reinforces the contrast between God’s purified people and human rebellion against Him.

Key versePermalink

I will send it out, declares the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones.

Zechariah 5:4
