Proverbs 9 closes the opening section with rival invitations. Wisdom builds her house, prepares a lavish feast, and calls the simple to leave their ways and live. The wise accept correction and grow; scoffers reject it. Folly mimics Wisdom’s public call but offers stolen, secret pleasures. Her hearer does not know that the dead are there.
Why it mattersPermalink
Both women address the same unformed person at a crossroads. Wisdom requires change, teachability, and fear of the Lord; Folly flatters desire and asks no transformation. Correction reveals the chosen path: the wise grow, while scoffers attack the messenger. The echo of 1:7 closes chapters 1–9 with a choice between tables, teachers, and destinations. Welcome correction, and judge invitations by where they lead.
