Proverbs 6 gathers four warnings against self-created ruin. A rash pledge can trap a person by his words, so he should urgently seek release. The sluggard should learn diligence from the ant before poverty overtakes him. A deceitful troublemaker uses his whole body to devise evil and sow discord, conduct the Lord hates. Finally, parental instruction warns against adultery: it is like carrying fire against one’s chest and brings injury, disgrace, and jealous vengeance.

Wisdom recognizes avoidable danger early and acts before it becomes disaster. Escape reckless obligations; work with initiative; and reject the pride, lies, violence, and discord God hates. Bind instruction to your heart, because correction lights the path of life. Do not entertain sexual temptation: adultery burns everyone it touches, and some losses cannot be repaid with money.
