Proverbs 25 begins the sayings of Solomon copied by the men of King Hezekiah. They range across rulers, disputes, neighbors, hospitality, enemies, grief, speech, moderation, and self-control. Wisdom is humble, truthful, discreet, gentle, and attentive to what a moment requires. Words can persuade, comfort, wound, betray confidence, or arrive beautifully at exactly the right time.

Consider what the moment and relationship require. Do not claim unearned honor, rush into disputes, expose confidences, boast of generosity, or speak without sensitivity. Use truthful words with good timing and gentle force. Practice moderation even with good things, respond generously to enemies, and govern your desires. Without self-control, a person is as vulnerable as a city whose walls have fallen.
