Proverbs opens by stating its purpose: to form wisdom, discipline, understanding, and judgment. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools reject instruction. A father warns his son not to join violent men whose greed turns their ambush against themselves. Wisdom then cries to the simple, scoffers, and fools. Those who reject correction will reap ruin, but whoever listens will live securely.

The chapter presents rival invitations. Sinners promise easy gain, while Wisdom offers correction and life. Wisdom begins with reverent submission to God and grows through teachability, so even the wise must keep learning. Her refusal to answer in disaster is judgment after persistent rejection: people eat the fruit of the path they chose. Reject unjust gain and receive correction while it is offered.
