What happensPermalink

God calls His people to remove idols, break up fallow ground, and circumcise their hearts. Disaster approaches from the north, like scorching wind and an army. Jeremiah cries in anguish, but God calls His people foolish, skilled at evil but not good. Jeremiah sees Judah’s ruin as creation collapsing: the earth is empty, light disappears, mountains shake, and fruitful land becomes wilderness. Jerusalem seeks her former lovers, but they reject her. God announces judgment, yet promises not to make a complete end.

Why it mattersPermalink

Genuine repentance requires a changed heart. The vision of an empty, darkened earth recalls creation’s beginning in Genesis 1:2, making Judah’s devastation look like creation unraveling. Yet God limits the destruction: He will not make a complete end. That assurance leaves room for the later promises to build and plant.

Key versePermalink

For thus says the Lord, “The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end.”

Jeremiah 4:27
