What happensPermalink

God’s people pollute the land through spiritual adultery, yet call Him Father. Judah saw the northern kingdom judged for abandoning God, but followed Israel’s sins and returned only in pretense. Yet God calls faithless Israel to return and acknowledge its guilt. He promises to restore His people to Zion with faithful shepherds, reunite Israel and Judah, and make Jerusalem His throne, where nations will gather. The chapter closes with a confession that idols cannot save and the people have sinned against God.

Why it mattersPermalink

Judah’s greater guilt comes from repeating Israel’s rebellion despite witnessing its consequences. Yet God still calls His faithless people to return and promises healing and restoration. His purpose reaches beyond punishment toward a reunited people living under His rule, with the nations gathered to Him.

Key versePermalink

Return, O faithless children, declares the Lord; for I am your master; I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.
