God calls Zion to arise because His glory has risen upon her while darkness covers the earth. Nations and kings stream toward her light, bringing her scattered children and wealth to glorify God’s sanctuary. Former oppressors now serve the city they despised, and God replaces violence with peace and destruction with righteousness. Finally, Zion no longer needs sun or moon, because the Lord Himself is her everlasting light; all her people are righteous and possess the land forever.
Why it mattersPermalink
God’s glory transforms forsaken Zion into an everlasting city of light, peace, righteousness, and worldwide worship. Postexilic Jerusalem only begins to anticipate this vision, in which nations and kings bring their treasures and God Himself replaces sun and moon. Revelation 21:23–26 and 22:5 directly echo Isaiah’s open gates, gathered nations, and city illuminated forever by divine glory.
