Isaiah exposes Israel’s sin. The people fast and humble themselves, then complain that God does not respond. He answers that oppression, violence, and selfishness contradict their worship. The fast He desires loosens injustice, feeds the hungry, shelters the homeless, and clothes the needy. Then their light will rise; God will guide and satisfy them as they rebuild ruined communities. If they honor the Sabbath by delighting in the LORD rather than pursuing themselves, He will give them Jacob’s heritage.
Why it mattersPermalink
God rejects fasting detached from justice and calls His people to worship that liberates, feeds, shelters, repairs, and delights in Him. Religious practices cannot manipulate God while daily life contradicts His character. Genuine devotion joins humility before God with mercy toward neighbors and Sabbath delight. Such a people become light in darkness, receive God’s guidance, and rebuild what sin has ruined.
