God summons the nations to court and declares that He raised a conqueror from the east, later identified as Cyrus. Terrified nations encourage one another and manufacture idols, but Israel need not fear: God chose them as His servant and will strengthen and defend them. He will make weak Israel a threshing sledge and provide water and trees in the wilderness. God then challenges the idols to explain the past, predict the future, or accomplish anything; they remain silent because they are nothing.
Why it mattersPermalink
The Lord directs Cyrus, silences idols, and assures weak Israel that His chosen servant need not fear. The conqueror rises because God planned and announced his victories, while manufactured gods cannot interpret history, predict the future, or save. Israel may appear abandoned, but the Creator has chosen, strengthened, and upheld them and will turn their wilderness journey into another exodus.
