Isaiah summons every nation to hear God’s sentence against the world. The Lord will slaughter earthly armies and overthrow the spiritual forces opposing Him. His judgment is pictured as a vast sacrifice in Edom: mountains flow with blood, the heavens dissolve, and Bozrah becomes a burning wasteland inhabited by wild creatures. Isaiah calls readers to consult the Lord’s written decree, which guarantees that every appointed judgment will occur.

God’s worldwide judgment falls especially upon Edom, turning the proud enemy of Zion into a lasting picture of desolation. Edom represents the nations arrayed against God’s people, and the sacrificial language portrays enemies devoted to divine judgment rather than offering atonement. The unending smoke is later echoed in Revelation 14:10–11 and 19:3 as imagery of final judgment.
