Isaiah pronounces woe on proud Ephraim, whose drunken glory Assyria will sweep away, though the Lord will crown the remnant. Judah’s drunken priests and prophets mock God’s warnings as childish, so He will teach them through invaders’ foreign speech. Jerusalem’s rulers boast in a “covenant with death,” but their refuge is a lie. God lays a tested cornerstone in Zion, and justice sweeps away every false shelter. Like a farmer treating crops appropriately, God judges with perfect wisdom.

God sweeps away drunken leaders’ false refuges, establishes His sure cornerstone, and judges wisely. Northern Israel fell to Assyria, and Judah repeats its error by trusting political arrangements rather than God. Because its leaders reject plain instruction, invading foreigners will teach them. Romans 9:33 and 1 Peter 2:6 identify the cornerstone with Christ; God’s severe “strange work” remains measured and purposeful.
