Isaiah begins an oracle against Moab. Its cities are devastated overnight, and mourning fills its temples, streets, and rooftops. Refugees flee south carrying their possessions, while cries of anguish spread throughout the land. The oracle cries out for Moab as its people flee, yet further violence awaits its survivors.
Why it mattersPermalink
Moab’s sudden devastation fills the land with refugees and grief, inviting lament even within deserved judgment. Chapter 15 begins an oracle completed in chapter 16 and concentrates on the suffering spreading from city to city. Isaiah does not celebrate a neighboring enemy’s collapse; divine justice never makes human pain trivial or licenses cruelty.
