What happensPermalink
Ezekiel announces a sword against Israel that will strike righteous and wicked alike. God prepares it for Babylon’s king. At a crossroads, Nebuchadnezzar uses divination to choose between Rabbah and Jerusalem; the result points toward Jerusalem. God condemns Judah’s ruler and overturns his crown until He gives authority to the one to whom judgment belongs. An oracle against Ammon follows: it too faces judgment.
Why it mattersPermalink
The sword continues chapter 20’s fire imagery: Babylon serves God’s judgment, even through its king’s pagan divination. Jerusalem’s catastrophe sweeps up righteous and wicked alike while chapter 18 holds each person accountable for their own conduct. The fallen crown leaves the monarchy’s future in God’s hands. Read alongside chapter 17, the promised ruler offers hope of authority restored by God.
Key versePermalink
Son of man, set your face toward Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuaries. Prophesy against the land of Israel.
