What happensPermalink

Elders again come to consult God, but He refuses and recounts Israel’s rebellion from Egypt through the wilderness and into the land. Idolatry, child sacrifice, and profaned Sabbaths recur, while God repeatedly spares His people for His name’s sake. The exiles seek to become like other nations, but God declares that He will rule over them. He will gather them into a new wilderness, purge the rebels, and bring His people home to worship Him. A closing oracle announces consuming fire against the south.

Why it mattersPermalink

Restoration echoes the exodus: deliverance, wilderness judgment, and entry into the land. The troubling “statutes that were not good” (25–26) contrast with God’s life-giving commands; one reading sees God giving rebels over to destructive worship. The chapter holds judgment and mercy within God’s determination to make His holiness known. Its final fire oracle leads into chapter 21’s sword.

Key versePermalink

And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I deal with you for my name’s sake, not according to your evil ways, nor according to your corrupt deeds, O house of Israel, declares the Lord God.
