What happensPermalink
Elders come to Ezekiel while harboring idols in their hearts. God declares that He Himself will answer such seekers and calls Israel to repent; anyone who continues in idolatry while consulting Him will be cut off. False prophets and those who seek their answers will bear judgment together. God then declares that even Noah, Daniel, and Job could save only themselves from Jerusalem’s coming sword, famine, wild beasts, and pestilence. Yet some survivors will be brought out.
Why it mattersPermalink
Chapters 12–14 expose rejection of true prophecy and reliance on false prophecy. God calls those who consult Him to turn from the idols occupying their hearts. Jerusalem’s guilt is so great that even exemplary righteous people could save only themselves. The survivors’ conduct will help the exiles understand God’s judgment: He has not destroyed Jerusalem without cause.
Key versePermalink
Therefore say to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord God: Repent and turn away from your idols, and turn away your faces from all your abominations.”
