What happensPermalink
Ezekiel condemns prophets who invent visions and claim that God has spoken. Like jackals among ruins, they have not repaired Israel’s breaches, but proclaim peace where there is none, like whitewash covering a flimsy wall. God will destroy the wall and exclude these prophets from Israel and its land. Ezekiel also condemns women who prophesy from their own hearts, using mysterious bands and veils to “hunt for souls.” God will tear away their devices and rescue His people from their lies.
Why it mattersPermalink
False prophecy makes rebellion appear safe. These prophets reassure people facing God’s judgment and discourage repentance, reversing Ezekiel’s watchman calling. Their promised “peace” echoes the prophets opposed by Jeremiah. The women’s precise practices are uncertain, but their deception has the same effect: strengthening the wicked and troubling the righteous. God exposes their false assurances and delivers His people.
Key versePermalink
Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Because you have uttered falsehood and seen lying visions, therefore behold, I am against you, declares the Lord God.”
