What happensPermalink
Amos completes his judgments on the nations with Moab and Judah, then turns the same formula against Israel itself. Israel sells and oppresses the poor, sexually exploits the vulnerable, profanes worship, makes Nazirites break their vows by drinking wine, and silences God’s prophets. God reminds Israel that He destroyed the Amorites, delivered them from Egypt, and raised prophets and Nazirites among them. Yet they rejected His gifts, so even the strongest will be unable to escape His judgment.
Why it mattersPermalink
Israel’s covenant relationship with God does not exempt it from the justice imposed on the nations; it makes Israel more accountable. Having received extraordinary deliverance and revelation, God’s people have answered His grace with injustice and resistance. Amos especially condemns their treatment of the vulnerable and their rejection of those consecrated or called by God.
Key versePermalink
Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals.
