What happensPermalink

Amos pronounces judgment on five of Israel’s neighbors. Damascus crushed Gilead; Gaza delivered entire communities to Edom, as did Tyre; Edom pursued his brother with relentless hostility; and Ammon brutally invaded Gilead to expand its territory. With the repeated declaration, “For three transgressions…and for four,” Amos portrays each nation’s guilt as overflowing. God therefore promises destruction against their rulers and strongholds.

Why it mattersPermalink

Yahweh is not merely Israel’s tribal God: He holds every nation accountable to standards of justice and righteousness. Brutality, human trafficking, betrayal, and merciless violence provoke His judgment even among peoples outside Israel’s covenant. Beginning with Israel’s enemies also prepares Amos’s audience for the surprise to come: the God who judges the nations impartially will apply His justice to Israel as well.
