What happensPermalink

Jesus Christ is the believer’s advocate with the Father and the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Knowing Him is shown by keeping His commandments and walking as Jesus walked. The command to love is both old and new in Christ’s light. John reassures children, fathers, and young men: they are forgiven, know God, and have overcome the evil one. He warns them not to love the passing world or its desires. Those who deny Jesus as the Christ deny both Father and Son.

Why it mattersPermalink

Assurance and vigilance belong together. Confidence rests in Christ’s work, while obedience, love, and perseverance mark a life abiding in Him. Because many antichrists have arisen, believers must let the message heard from the beginning abide in them. The world passes away; those who do God’s will remain forever.

Key versePermalink

Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.

1 John 2:24
