What happensPermalink
John begins with what he and other eyewitnesses heard, saw, and touched: the eternal life revealed in Jesus. They proclaim Him so readers may share fellowship with them, with the Father, and with His Son. Their message is that God is light, without any darkness. Those who claim fellowship while walking in darkness lie, but those who walk in the light share fellowship, and Jesus’s blood cleanses them from sin. No one may claim sinlessness: God forgives and cleanses those who confess, while denying sin makes Him a liar.
Why it mattersPermalink
John grounds the gospel in the incarnate Jesus whom the eyewitnesses encountered and calls believers to honest fellowship in God’s light. Assurance does not require pretending to be sinless; it rests in truthful confession, continued walking in the light, and God’s promised forgiveness and cleansing.
Key versePermalink
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
