What happensPermalink

Zephaniah urgently calls the humble to seek the Lord in righteousness and humility, that they might be hidden from His anger. God will judge Philistia and give its land to the remnant of His people. Moab and Ammon, who taunted God’s people in their pride, will become like Sodom and Gomorrah. Cush too will fall, and mighty Assyria will become a desolate waste inhabited by animals.

Why it mattersPermalink

The coming Day still leaves an urgent opportunity to seek God and perhaps receive mercy. Zephaniah looks in every direction around Judah—west to Philistia, east to Moab and Ammon, south to Cush, and north toward Assyria—showing that no nation lies outside God’s rule or judgment. Pride, false gods, and national strength cannot protect them; ultimately, people from every nation will worship the Lord.

Key versePermalink

Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands; seek righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the anger of the Lord.

Zephaniah 2:3
