What happensPermalink

Israel should ask the Lord for rain rather than trust household gods and diviners. The people wander like sheep without a shepherd, so God will punish their faithless leaders and care for His flock Himself. From Judah will come strong leadership, pictured as a cornerstone, tent peg, and battle bow. He will strengthen Judah and restore Joseph, gathering His people from among the nations, including Egypt and Assyria. Like a new exodus, God will bring them through the sea, humble their enemies, and make His people strong in Him.

Why it mattersPermalink

God alone can provide what His people seek from idols, diviners, and failed leaders. Because He has compassion on His flock, He will replace weakness and dispersion with faithful leadership, strength, and restoration. The reunification of Judah and the northern tribes reverses Israel’s long division, while the exodus imagery portrays their return as another great act of divine deliverance.

Key versePermalink

My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the Lord of hosts cares for his flock, the house of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle.
