A father gives three appeals. First, he passes on the teaching he received from his own father: get wisdom, prize her, and never forsake her. Second, he contrasts two paths. Wisdom leads along an upright way where steps are unhampered and light grows brighter; the wicked walk in deep darkness and stumble blindly. Third, he urges his son to keep instruction within, guard his heart, reject crooked speech, look straight ahead, and keep his feet from evil.

Wisdom is an inheritance each generation must receive and personally embrace. It must also be guarded, because repeated choices establish a path and gradually form a life. Guarding the heart means directing the whole person—speech, attention, and conduct—toward what is straight. Seek wisdom, hold fast to instruction, and watch the inner desires from which actions flow.
