What happensPermalink
Micah presents the Lord’s covenant lawsuit against Israel, calling the mountains to witness. God recalls His faithfulness in delivering Israel from Egypt, protecting them from Balak and Balaam, and bringing them into the promised land. The people ask whether extravagant sacrifices could satisfy Him, but God requires justice, steadfast love, and humble faithfulness. Israel uses dishonest scales, practices violence, and lies. Because they persist in corruption, God will make their prosperity futile and their land desolate.
Why it mattersPermalink
Israel cannot compensate for covenant unfaithfulness with increasingly costly worship. God has already shown His faithfulness; He desires a people whose lives reflect His character through justice, mercy, and humble dependence on Him. Their dishonest commerce and violence reveal the gap between religious practice and genuine covenant obedience, so the righteous Judge brings the covenant consequences their sins deserve.
Key versePermalink
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
