What happensPermalink

The surviving community asks God to remember their disgrace. Foreigners possess their inheritance; hunger, danger, and forced labor dominate their lives. Women are raped, princes hung up by their hands, and elders dishonored. Joy has turned to mourning. They bear the consequences of their ancestors’ sins and confess their own. Zion lies desolate, yet the Lord reigns forever. They plead for Him to restore them to Himself and renew their days, ending with the fearful possibility that He has rejected them.

Why it mattersPermalink

The final prayer keeps the twenty-two verse count while leaving the acrostic pattern behind. Chapter 3 urged the people to return to God; here they ask Him to restore them to Himself. They appeal to His enduring kingship while their restoration remains unrealized. The unresolved ending leaves the community praying amid the fear of rejection.

Key versePermalink

Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old.
