What happensPermalink
A man under God’s wrath describes darkness, bitterness, confinement, and unanswered prayer. He recalls the Lord’s steadfast love, mercy, and faithfulness, finding reason to hope and wait. He urges the community to examine its ways and return to God. They confess rebellion, yet say He has not forgiven. Weeping for Jerusalem, the speaker recalls being hunted and crying from a pit. Remembering that God heard and redeemed him, he appeals for justice against his attackers.
Why it mattersPermalink
The central poem holds hope and anguish together. God’s compassion gives the sufferer reason to keep praying while his circumstances remain unresolved. The Lord rules over calamity and disapproves of oppression, but does not afflict from His heart. Hope sustains confession, waiting, and appeals for justice even as grief returns.
Key versePermalink
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end.
