What happensPermalink
As God restores Judah and Jerusalem, He gathers the nations for judgment because they scattered His people, divided His land, and treated His people as commodities. Joel summons the nations to total war, even beating farm tools into weapons, but their strength cannot save them. God harvests the gathered nations for judgment, roaring from Zion so that heaven and earth quake while He remains a refuge for His people. Judah is restored to extraordinary abundance, with a fountain flowing from the house of the Lord.
Why it mattersPermalink
Joel reverses Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3: instead of beating swords into plowshares, the nations beat plowshares into swords and muster all their strength, yet cannot withstand God’s judgment. The Day of the Lord ends in restoration: the land flourishes, God’s people know Him, and the Lord dwells in Zion.
Key versePermalink
The Lord roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth quake. But the Lord is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the people of Israel.
