What happensPermalink

The lament continues with tears and revulsion at Judah’s treachery. Lies and evil pervade Judah; even neighbors and brothers cannot be trusted. The people refuse to know God, so He will test them, ruin Jerusalem, and scatter them abroad. God summons professional mourners as death overtakes the city. Wisdom, strength, and riches give no reason to boast; true glory is knowing the Lord, who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness. Though circumcised, Judah is uncircumcised in heart like the nations.

Why it mattersPermalink

Judah’s corruption ultimately reveals a failure to know God. Their injustice, deceit, and idolatry contradict the character of the God they claim as their own. True wisdom therefore consists in knowing Him and valuing what He values. External covenant signs cannot replace that inward relationship and faithfulness.

Key versePermalink

But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 9:24
