What happensPermalink
An army approaches Jerusalem from the north to punish its continual evil. From least to greatest, the people are greedy and false; prophets and priests promise peace when there is none, and no one is ashamed. God calls Judah to seek the ancient paths and heed His watchmen, but they refuse both His word and His law, making even their sacrifices unacceptable. Therefore, God summons a great nation against Jerusalem. Jeremiah tests the people like metal, but refining fails to remove their wickedness: they are rejected silver.
Why it mattersPermalink
The ancient paths and the watchmen represent guidance Judah repeatedly refuses. Costly sacrifices cannot repair a life that rejects God’s instruction. The final image of rejected silver gathers the accusations together: repeated testing exposes stubborn corruption. Judah’s danger grows from refusing the very word that could direct her steps.
Key versePermalink
Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’”
