What happensPermalink
God summons the Medes and other kingdoms against Babylon. Once His golden cup of judgment, she will now be repaid for violence against Zion. Her idols are worthless before the Creator; her warriors panic and her city becomes desolate. God assures Israel and Judah that they are not forsaken and calls them to flee Babylon and remember Jerusalem. In Zedekiah’s fourth year, Jeremiah sends this oracle to Babylon with Seraiah. He must read it and sink it, weighted with a stone, in the Euphrates as a sign of Babylon’s fall.
Why it mattersPermalink
Babylon’s power remains subject to the God who used it. The Creator-versus-idols passage repeats chapter 10, while Revelation 18 echoes the calls to flee Babylon and the image of its irreversible fall. The closing sign predates Jerusalem’s destruction: even before Judah falls, Babylon’s own judgment has been announced.
Key versePermalink
The Lord has brought about our vindication; come, let us declare in Zion the work of the Lord our God.
