What happensPermalink
The collection of oracles concerning the nations opens with Egypt. At Carchemish, Pharaoh Neco’s army rises like the Nile but flees before Babylon; this is the Lord’s day of vengeance, and no medicine can heal Egypt. A second oracle foretells Nebuchadnezzar’s invasion of Egypt itself, the scattering of its mercenaries, punishment of its gods and kings, and Memphis’s ruin. Yet Egypt will again be inhabited. God also reassures Jacob: He will restore His people from captivity, disciplining but not destroying them.
Why it mattersPermalink
Egypt’s military strength and gods offer no security against the Lord. The two scenes carry the threat from defeat abroad to invasion at home, exposing the danger of Judah’s reliance on Egypt. The closing promise to Jacob keeps these international judgments connected to God’s purposes for His own people.
Key versePermalink
Why are your mighty ones face down? They do not stand because the Lord thrust them down.
