What happensPermalink

God addresses Judeans throughout Egypt: they have seen that idolatry destroyed Judah, yet they repeat the same sins and refuse to humble themselves. He will judge them in Egypt by sword, famine, and pestilence; only a few fugitives will return. The people reject Jeremiah and vow to worship the queen of heaven, claiming it once brought prosperity. Jeremiah answers that their idolatry caused Jerusalem’s ruin. God’s word, not theirs, will stand; Pharaoh Hophra’s fall to his enemies will confirm it.

Why it mattersPermalink

The remnant has reversed both the exodus and the moral meaning of its history. In Egypt once again, it credits idols with blessing and blames abandoning them for disaster. God therefore declares that Judeans there will no longer invoke His name. Hophra’s downfall will show whose prophetic word will stand: God’s or theirs.

Key versePermalink

And those who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who came to the land of Egypt to live, shall know whose word will stand, mine or theirs.

Jeremiah 44:28
