What happensPermalink

Johanan, the commanders, and the remnant ask Jeremiah to pray for guidance, solemnly promising to obey whatever God says. After ten days, God commands them to remain in Judah: He will build and plant them, protect them from Babylon, and show them mercy. If they flee to Egypt seeking safety from war and hunger, sword, famine, and pestilence will follow them there. Jeremiah charges them with disobedience and warns that the refuge they desire will become a place of death.

Why it mattersPermalink

God’s answer tests the remnant’s promise to obey. Staying in devastated Judah requires trust in His protection, while Egypt offers an apparent security He forbids them to seek. The language of building and planting renews the restorative hope of Jeremiah’s commission. Their response in chapter 43 will expose the gulf between their pledge and their conduct.

Key versePermalink

If you will remain in this land, then I will build you up and not pull you down; I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I relent of the disaster that I did to you.
