What happensPermalink

God condemns the shepherds who scattered His flock. He will gather the remnant and raise David’s righteous Branch to reign with wisdom, justice, and righteousness. Israel’s restoration will surpass the exodus. Jeremiah grieves over false prophets who claim God’s authority while encouraging wickedness. God did not send them; had they truly heard Him, they would have turned His people from evil. Their dreams are straw beside God’s true word, which is like fire and a hammer. God will punish these prophets with everlasting shame.

Why it mattersPermalink

Chapter 22’s failed kings are followed by the promise of a righteous Davidic king, whom Christians recognize in Jesus. False prophets likewise fail their calling by encouraging evil with words God has never spoken. Faithful leadership must reflect God’s justice and lead His people to heed His word.

Key versePermalink

Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
